Similarities And Differences Between Xeomin And Botox

Learn the fundamental similarities and differences between Xeomin and Botox before deciding on skin treatment

Over the past few years, the use of injectables for promoting smoother and younger-looking skin has become popular. Xeomin and Botox are the two common injectables known for their ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In this article, we will walk you through the similarities and differences between the two treatments.

Similarities Between Xeomin And Botox

Xeomin and Botox are neuromodulators that contain Botulinum Toxin Type A. This neurotoxin is obtained from the bacterial species called Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum Toxin Type A when injected in the targeted area, relaxes the muscles by blocking neuromuscular signals at the injection site. These injectables contain an active ingredient and treat several conditions.

Effectiveness Of The Toxins

  • A clinical trial was conducted by The Journal of Dermatology Surgery to compare the active ingredients of Xeomin and Botox. In the trial, 250 women were included who either received 20 units of Xeomin or 20 units of Botox. The results of the study indicated that both the toxins showed similar effectiveness after four months.

Xeomin and Botox, both are excellent treatments for treating signs of aging. As compared to other invasive procedures, these are relatively convenient to administer and effective treatments. Once they are injected into the muscle they start working quickly. However, when used for aesthetic purposes, their full effects are seen after 14 days.

Differences Between Xeomin And botox

Despite containing the same type of toxin, Xeomin and Botulinum are different drugs. Therefore, their differences are more in number compared to similarities. Let’s have a look at the differences between the two injectables.

Approved In 2010

  • In 2010, Xeomin was approved by FDA for the treatment of glabellar lines along with several other conditions. Xeomin is a cosmetic procedure that can be used for getting rid of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes.

In addition, it is also used for the treatment of excessive drooling and salivation or chronic sialorrhea. Abnormal muscle contractions of the neck, eyelids, or limbs can also be reduced with this injectable.

Approve In 1985

  • Botox was approved as a cosmetic treatment by FDA in 1985. In addition to its use for aesthetic enhancement, it is also helpful for conditions such as overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, and excessive sweating.

Botox has also been approved for medical treatment of headaches and migraines. Just like Xeomin, it can also treat muscle spasms and abnormal contractions of the limbs, neck, and eyelids.

Duration Of Effects

  • A randomized study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of both these treatments revealed that Xeomin works faster and lasts longer than Botox. In this study, 180 people were assessed over six months. It was found that women experienced a greater effect than men.

It is advisable to get your treatment from a licensed provider or medical doctor. Although both the treatments work in identical ways it is important to consult your provider before the procedure to determine which option is better for you.

Interactions

  • xeomin and botoxIf you are on other Botulinum neurotoxin products, avoid getting Xeomin and Botox. Receiving more than one type of neurotoxin injection without a long interval between sessions would result in worsening of the effects such as muscle weakness.

Xeomin and Botox should not be administered with medications that have similar effects. These medications include aminoglycosides, anticholinergics, and muscle relaxants.
